K2 (ages 5–6) is the final stage of the kindergarten journey, preparing children for the transition to primary school. They develop fluency in reading, confidence in writing, and strong number skills, alongside science, cultural awareness, and creative expression. By now, children work well independently and in groups, showing resilience, empathy, and self-control. 

A Blend of EYFS and leading educational philosophies

At Upward, our K2 program prepares children for a smooth transition to primary school while keeping the joy of learning at the heart of every day. Following the EYFS framework, we strengthen core skills in reading, writing, mathematics, and inquiry-based understanding of the world, while continuing to nurture the Prime Areas of communication, physical development, and emotional well-being. The Reggio-Waldorf approach inspires purposeful projects, creative expression, and outdoor learning, allowing children to explore big ideas and take ownership of their learning. Teachers provide the right blend of structure and independence, fostering confidence, responsibility, and a love for discovery that equips them for the challenges and opportunities ahead.

Communication and Language (CL)

• Speaking confidently in front of groups, retelling stories in sequence
• Using a wide vocabulary and understanding more complex instructions
• Listening attentively for longer periods and contributing to group discussions

Physical Development (PD)

• Good control and coordination in both large and small movements
• Writing with a steady pencil grip and proper letter formation
• Awareness of healthy eating, exercise, and personal hygiene without reminders

Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED)

• Working well in teams, showing leadership in group activities

Literacy

• Reading simple books fluently and beginning to read unfamiliar words using phonics
• Understanding and discussing the meaning of what they read
• Working toward writing short stories or factual sentences with correct spacing, capital letters, and punctuation.

Mathematics

• Confidently adding and subtracting numbers up to 20 and beyond
• Understanding number bonds, doubling/halving, and simple problem-solving
• Recognising coins, telling the time to the hour/half hour, and comparing measures

Understanding the World

• Talking about past and present events, similarities, and differences in environments
• Exploring basic science concepts — floating/sinking, magnetism, plant growth
• Using technology for learning — simple typing, drawing tools, or educational apps

Expressive Arts and Design

• Planning and creating art projects independently
